Kansas prison inmates are held by the Kansas Department of Corrections in the Lansing, El Dorado, Hutchinson, Norton, Ellsworth, Winfield and Larned correctional facilities and the Topeka Correctional Facility for women. County jails run by the 105 sheriffs hold pretrial detainees and misdemeanor sentences, and the Sedgwick County jail in Wichita and the Johnson County jail in Olathe are the largest.

The state lookup is KASPER, the Kansas Adult Supervised Population Electronic Repository. It covers people in prison, people on parole or post release supervision and people who left KDOC custody, keyed to the KDOC number or the name.

KASPER returns the KDOC number, name, photograph, date of birth, race and sex, height, weight, hair and eye color, the current status and facility or parole office, the custody level, the earliest possible release date, the sentence begin date and the offenses with the county, case number and sentence. Discharged people stay in KASPER with their discharge date, and registered offenders link to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation registry. KASPER does not cover county jails or juvenile facilities.

The Kansas Open Records Act, K.S.A. 45-215 and following, makes the custody record public, and KASPER posts photographs, physical descriptions, offenses and release dates. Sheriffs release booking photos, though Kansas restricts the release of booking photos by agencies in some cases when the arrest did not lead to charges. Medical and mental health records, the pre-sentence investigation, classification and disciplinary files are closed. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation sells a name based criminal history check to anyone through its online portal for a fee.

Kansas replaced parole with sentencing guidelines in 1993, so most prisoners serve a fixed term reduced by good time and then a set period of post release supervision run by KDOC parole officers. The Prisoner Review Board hears parole for pre guidelines sentences, decides revocations and reviews clemency. Probation is supervised by court services officers of the district court or by community corrections agencies in each county, so probationers appear in court records, not in KASPER. The judgment sits with the clerk of the district court of the convicting county.

If KASPER returns nothing, check the Sedgwick County jail search for a Wichita arrest or the Johnson, Wyandotte, Shawnee or Douglas county roster, since pending cases and misdemeanor sentences stay in the jail. A probationer is in district court records. Check the federal Bureau of Prisons locator for a federal case, including the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, and VINELink for a recent release.
