Lawrence County is located in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania and is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The county seat is New Castle.

The county government is composed of three commissioners, who are elected in staggered four-year terms. The county is divided into nine municipalities, each of which is governed by a mayor and council.

Lawrence County is home to several state parks, including Moraine State Park, McConnells Mill State Park, and Jennings Environmental Education Center. The county is also home to the Lawrence County Historical Society, which operates a museum and research library.
