Rusk County is located in the eastern part of Texas and is part of the Longview-Marshall Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Henderson.

Rusk County is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, with each member representing one of four precincts. The county judge is the presiding officer of the court, and is elected county-wide. Other members include the county clerk, district clerk, sheriff, and tax assessor-collector, all of whom are elected county-wide.

The county is also served by a number of elected officials, including a district attorney, district judge, county court-at-law judge, county treasurer, and county surveyor.

Rusk County is part of the Longview, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area, as well as the Longview–Marshall, TX Combined Statistical Area. It is also located in the Tyler–Jacksonville, TX Combined Statistical Area.
